This was a birthday present for my friend TJ, it is the weapon of his character Captain Mathias Renard in a realm of Steampunk and anthropomorphic animals where he pilots a giant airship. The idea is for this to be the hilt by itself with a trigger mechanism to extend a 3 foot long blade {think of the extending katana from the more recent Star Trek movie}.
I made the whole thing using poplar and 3mm plywood i had scraps of laying about, the trigger is poplar, aluminum rod and compression springs. The handle itself was formed by gluing together 3 pieces of poplar {one being cut hollow} and then turned on a lathe to get the shaping.
This was one of my more complex pieces, as I haven't used moving parts before.
